Golden Artist Colors, Simply the Best

Kathy Carroll at the Golden Artist Colors Distributors meetingKathy Carroll arrived in New Berlin, New York this past August for a four-day distributors meeting at Golden Artist Colors. Kathy says, “In my 20 some odd years in the business, this was the best distributor meeting I have ever attended. There was so much information given out regarding the products and their production. It was a wonderful sharing experience among the distributors that made things better for everyone who was involved as a Golden Proceed distributor. They opened up the entire factory for us to go on a several hour tour. One part of the tour was the outdoor elements testing area, where they expose the paint to rain, hail, freezing cold, heat and sun. Throughout the entire four days, we were introduced and able to speak to any and all the employees, which made it great to put a face to a voice.” As an employee owned company, Golden Artist Colors takes immense pride in all they do, including their facility. “It’s wonderful to see how clean and picturesque GOLDEN is. The lunches and dinners they provided for us were incredible; they treated us like we were royalty. They are so willing to do whatever they need to do to help the artisans.”

Visit to Proceed WikiAs Golden strives to excel in their product and customer relations, they have found yet another way to assist their artisans: the Proceed Wiki. The Proceed Wiki consists of a wide variety of products, videos and educational materials directly at your fingertips. It is a vast source of technical information as well as product finishes and much more.

Here is a sample of product finishes provided through the Proceed Wiki that will inspire you: Category: Finishes

Always striving to make improvements, Golden has enhanced its Full Bodied Glaze. This glaze will be released in October and will have all the same admirable qualities as the prior one with two new exciting additions. It will strap down in 24 hours or less and it is scrub-able! Be sure to look for it.

Introducing Chalk IT!

Manufactured as a private labeled for Kathy Carroll, is Chalk IT! by Faux by Kathy and Stain IT! by Faux by Kathy, coming this October. Kathy explains, “Chalk IT! by FBK is a paint that will allow you to create beautiful finishes for cabinetry and wood surfaces. Stain IT! by FBK is an alternative to Faux Effects® and Aqua Finishing Solutions Stain & Seal™. It can be customized into any color without maintaining a large inventory of colors. In addition, it will be sold in 16 ounces, quarts and gallons.” They are a very affordable alternative. Call for news regarding product release or watch the Faux by Kathy website. These are products you will definitely want to try!

Golden Virtual Paint Mixer

Golden Virtual Paint MixerHave you ever needed colors mixed on the spot, while under time constraints, and trying to satisfy the needs of designers and clients alike? It can be daunting when the paint color and mixture must be decided immediately and the order placed in the imminent future.

Golden Artist Colors has done it again. With the introduction of the Virtual Paint Mixer this past May, the lives of artisans everywhere have been made that much easier. This interactive mixer is a tool that allows artisans to play with and combine any color and combination of paint without the added expense.

Golden Virtual Paint MixerSpeaking with Chris Farrell, Creative Director at Golden Artist Colors, he says, “The first group of painters to test the mixer was college students: art majors. The benefit they immediately saw was mixing paint without wasting it. It’s an educational tool where you get the feel for the colors, how to play with them and a sense of proportions. Its not color theory, it’s color practice.”

While extraordinarily beneficial to the environment and pocketbooks everywhere, the Virtual Paint Mixer does so much more. There are several interactive ways to get the results for the colors desired. The first is to simply select paint colors and combinations of varying degrees and click on the boxes below to save the results obtained. Another option would be to click on the image tab. From there, choose a hue and then a box, to save the desired result.

Golden Virtual Paint MixerChris was an integral part of the development in the color schemes and says, “I worked on the Tint and Glaze Poster. What we did is take every color and mix them very scientifically, five different ratios of tints and glazes of each color. That gave us radical results. Another thing, and this was a late feature, is to upload your image and select your color. Here you can match something in a room and develop your palette by downloading it directly from the picture.” This provides an additional asset for artisans to upload images from client sites, “sample colors,” and develop a wide spectrum of “matching paint mixtures.”

“Another feature, fairly basic but important, is that you can save the boxes below, the entire session really, and recall it later or send it by email, print it, or share it on Facebook®. The Virtual Paint Mixer is a chance to play and experiment with paint that will only get better and better,” Chris says.

Using the Virtual Paint Mixer on the job is an extension of the artisans’ tools. Chris says, “As for the iPhone and iPad, you can’t upload an image directly from these devices. That has to do with Apple’s interface, not our program; we’re looking into workarounds. I’ve personally used it on the Kindle Fire and Google Nexus.” GOLDEN recommends following the instructions provided by your graphics card and monitor’s manufacturer. However, they have added a link for a third party site that assists in color calibrations below the color boxes for your convenience.

If you have not tried the Virtual Paint Mixer, it is definitely worth checking out. It is easy to interface with as well, and is an exceptional tool to have in your arsenal. As with all GOLDEN products, the Virtual Paint Mixer goes above and beyond!

Decorative Artisan Speak!
How Kathy has helped customers in a pinch!

Based out of Dallas, Texas, Mark and Sheila Burke are dedicated do it yourselfers. Several years ago, they decided to shape their home into today’s current trends, one project at a time.

Doing some research on the Internet for one of their home projects, Mark found Kathy Carroll’s website and placed an order. “My wife wanted a light venetian plaster in the master bath. Every time I applied it, I scarred the walls, leaving trowel marks.” This was the first project Mark had embarked on in their home. After ordering some supplies from Kathy, they received a call from her former Office Manager, Peggy, asking what they were doing. Ten minutes later, Kathy called Mark, “She calls me and asks what product I’m using, which was Modern Masters. After asking a few more questions and listening to the answers, she said I needed a different trowel. She sent me Japan Scrapers for half the price of what I had originally bought!” Kathy gave Mark helpful tips for working with Modern Masters to obtain the best results. “She explained that I had applied it too heavily and perpetuated the problem. She told me to lighten up the load and do some sanding. From there, I had the tools to correct it. Now, my wife – the boss – loves the room and shows it off to her friends.”

Their master bath, done in a soft gold with a copper metallic ceiling, turned out beautiful. Sheila handmade a bathroom curtain, adding the prefect touch, along with the chandelier she hung for ambiance and lighting.

That was only the beginning for the Burke’s. Once Mark and Sheila saw the stunning results of their hard work, they were hungry for more. With milk wash or white varnish cabinets, Mark and Sheila felt their kitchen needed a facelift. They began the undertaking of sixty cabinets that Mark says, “Is creeping up to the finish.” There was a modest amount of grain showing through. They were a good twenty years old and beat up,” Mark explains. “All the cabinets, except the eight in the island, are from the March 2011 Quick Inspiration sample. It’s a coffee color. If we needed to alter the color, we would call Kathy and she always helped us with that. Kathy is the go to once we ‘think’ we want to take on a new project. For the cabinets, I did the priming and sanding and Sheila did all of the final painting.” The cabinets provide a richness and warmth, making the kitchen the focal point it is meant to be.

The order for the crackle is currently being placed with Chicago Institute of Fine Finishes, as Mark and Sheila get ready to add to their décor with the transformation of their island. As Mark says, “The kitchen project started two years ago. Sheila wanted black cabinets. I wasn’t fond of the idea but Kathy’s immediate reaction was; ‘yes, they need to be darker.” The eight cabinets will be a lovely compliment in black crackle, converting the former island into a luxurious centerpiece.

When an opportunity arose for business, Mark flew into Chicago and met Kathy face to face. “Once you get in, you’re a member of the family. It’s knowledge transfer every time you talk to her. She sells you the right stuff for DIY and the help you need to be successful. She makes sure of it, that’s why we keep going back.”

As Mark says, “We are a long way from being done.” There are projects he and Sheila still have on the horizon as they peruse the gallery of finishes at the Faux by Kathy website, excited for their next endeavor.
