With concern about the environment on the rise, it is no wonder that the popularity of water-borne, or water based, products is growing.  When asked about the benefits of using water-borne products Ron Bryze of E. Kinast in Hanover Park, Illinois had this to say:  “the green movement isn’t going to slow down soon.  The products are better for the environment and better for the person spraying them.”  Also, due to the innovative formulation of M.L. Campbell’s water-borne products they, are just as effective as their solvent-based counterparts.

We have had great success when using these products in our classes at the Chicago Institute of Fine Finishes.  Give them a try for yourself today!

Creative Finishes by Kass Wilson

Decorative Artisan Book Kass Wilson Creative FinishesAre you looking for some new inspiration?  Kass Wilson’s book may be the muse that you have been looking for.  Creative Finishes is a “how to” book written for both the professional and the novice alike.  Giving ideas for everything from columns to candlesticks, there is something for everyone.  For the beginner, it is a step-by-step guide to straight forward faux finishes created on a small scale.  For the professional, it is an invitation to think out of the box, or in this case, off the wall.  No manufacturer names are given for products used in the book.  This allows the reader to use their favorite products and let their creativity flow.

When Kass was asked by the publisher to write this book she hesitated.  She asked herself why she would want to teach her potential customers how to do what she does?  The answer was simple:  “The novice will usually start with a small project, this is their introduction into the realization that it is not as easy as it may appear.”  It is one thing to apply a finish to a candlestick, but an entirely different thing to apply it to a wall.  Kass says “my best customer is often the person who has attempted to do it themselves.  Once they try they develop an appreciation for what it takes to achieve professional results.”  After a year, she accepted the challenge and wrote the book.  The publisher’s goal was to produce a successful “how to” book.  Kass’ ulterior motive was “to offer inspiration about where artistic finishes can be done that are not necessarily expected.”

Kass Wilson has been serving the Atlanta area through her business Wallstreat since 1992.  She operates on the belief that “your reputation is the hardest thing to gain and the quickest thing to lose.”  She prides herself on never doing the same finish twice.  She wants her customers to have a finish that is completely unique for them. That is what makes them know they have something special. Kass works very closely with designers.  She is often invited, as a guest speaker, to offer inspiration about creative ways to utilize artistic finishes that will enhance their design projects.

While in Chicago, Kass stopped by the Chicago Institute of Fine Finishes.  Having heard of Kathy’s reputation, Kass decided to take advantage of the Private Session option at Chicago Institute of Fine Finishes with Kathy Carroll as her instructor.  She says of her experience with Kathy:  “over the years I have invested a lot of time and money on my education.  It is getting more difficult to find classes that are truly inspiring or offer something new.  Working with Kathy was like a mutual think tank.  Together we came up with some great new looks.”  She was also very pleased with the fact that she could customize the colors and techniques to fit her market in Atlanta.  The end result of her time was a group of samples that were highly marketable and sold immediately.  She says of presenting her new boards  “I took the new sample boards into a design firm and laid them out on a table.  The depth of color and the beautiful textures caught their eye and stopped them in their tracks.  Showing them something new made them excited about artistic finishes.”

Ron Bryze’s College of Wood Finishing Knowledge is now available

Decorative Artisan Ron Bryze The College of Wood Finishing KnowledgeWhether you have been working with wood for years or are just getting started, this is the perfect book to add to your library.  Ron Bryze describes his book as being “soup to nuts” and says he is “big on telling the ‘whys’ of wood finishing, not just the ‘hows’.” You will learn about woodworking from all aspects:  equipment, types of finishes, stains, techniques, and business.

Ron decided to write this book because there was nothing of its kind out there.  Most woodworking knowledge had previously been transferred verbally.  While working with customers and helping them troubleshoot their problems, he put together a pamphlet of frequently asked questions and answers.  He says he did this because he “got tired of watching people struggle, and wanted to help make them more productive and profitable.” The pamphlet grew and grew, until he decided to expand it into his book College of Wood Finishing Knowledge.

Ron Bryze was born into woodworking.  His family has been in the furniture business for over 80 years.  Ron himself has been in the woodworking business for 35 years.  He is currently working for E. Kinast Distributors, a distributor of products for the woodworking industry, in Hanover Park, Illinois.  Previously he owned a high-end woodworking company.  During his 30 years of business, he had the opportunity to work on several high-end homes and restorations, including some Frank Lloyd Wright homes.
