General Finishes

General FinishesFrom the first day the present ownership acquired General Finishes in 1985, GF has been committed to developing high-quality cabinet and furniture finishes. In the early 1990’s, General Finishes began to move in a significant new direction---shifting from solvents to the development of waterborne products. After years of expansion, GF is now based in East Troy, Wisconsin, and it continues to grow. Sara Krause, Sales Manager, noted the latest move for the company was the completion of a 25,000 square-foot expansion. Through each phase of growth, GF has remained focused on their primary goal of delivering innovative, top-of-the-line products. “Despite having a large web presence and huge product success, we are a small company of about thirty employees,” said Sara.

General Finishes has been a pioneer in waterborne products, and now GF consistently outperforms the industry competition. As Sara points out: “We are one of the leading developers, if not the leader, of water-based products, stains, dyes, paint lines and top coats that are both professional and consumer friendly.”

GF’s environmentally friendly water-based products have won prestigious awards from Fine Woodworking, including Best Overall Choice, Top Choice, and Best Brush-On.

General Finishes’ innovative designs are developed and tested with top performance and durability in mind. Aimed at both the professional and retail sectors, their products are specifically formulated for ease of use and consistently outstanding outcome. No matter the design requirement, they have a product to meet that need. As Sara explained, “We have water-based products that are engineered to look like oil-based finishes. Our goal is to provide the right product to achieve whatever effect the customer wants. Though a majority of our professional products are spray only, a few can be applied just like the retail line—by wiping or brushing on.”

General FinishesAmong the GF favorites are the pre-mixed, water-based Milk Paints, available in a twenty-eight rich colors that satisfy the demands of both professionals and general consumers. Wonderful for furniture and cabinets, they are easy to apply and offer exceptional results for both interior and exterior projects. “This product was named for its low sheen, flat finish which mimics traditional powdered Milk Paint. It is a pre-mixed consistent product, designed for furniture, craft, and cabinets.” says Sara.

General Finishes consistently uses the latest technology to expand its inventory to bring you the newest and highest quality waterborne products. Soon to be released will be Pearl Effects, a new addition to the Milk Paint line. “This decorative coating will be an accessory to the Milk Paint line that will impart a ‘pearlized’ look. Pearl Effects can be mixed with GF’s paints, glazes and top coats or applied over some of our existing products to create a translucent effect,” said Sara.

New to the flooring industry are the Pro-Floor products. As Sara explains, “The General Finishes Water-based Pro Floor System offers contractors and consumers a revolutionary low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds), low-odor, fast-drying option for hardwood flooring. Our floor stains feature a Ready to Match system, whereby the 18 base colors can be intermixed to create hundreds of different shades. Designed to be used with our Pro Sealer and one of our Pro Topcoats, these products achieve the look and durability of an oil-modified urethane in an environmentally-friendly package. The Pro Floor System is suitable for all interior wood flooring applications, including residences, sports floors, retail and commercial facilities.”

General Finishes goes to great lengths to formulate products that will achieve the highest product margins and results. Gel Stains deliver all that and more. They are efficient and versatile products that save both time and money and can be applied over an existing surface. As Sara noted, “As little as $100 in materials can do an entire kitchen, and you can vary the effects to allow more or less of the wood grain to show through for different effects.” Java, just one popular color among many, can transform tired cabinets into a custom look for a fraction of the cost. Sure to be a top-seller, GF just recently introduced Black into their Gel Stain lineup.

General Finishes takes great pride in offering a wide array of exceptional products. Your clients, designers, and most importantly you, will be thrilled with the results. Be sure to order today. If you have questions, drop by our studio or call; we are more than happy to help our customers.
