When pouring your soul into your work, whether for a client or yourself, the right paint, the right brush—they matter. High quality paints and brushes extend life and durability. The clarity, craftsmanship, and utter perfection is there for all to see.

Artisans understand the benefits of using top quality paints. Difficulties arise if the brushes are not compliant with the paint, or even with the standards they themselves desire. Recognizing the problem is half the battle, finding the right brushes can be another challenge. Pierre Finkelstein encountered that same hurdle searching for the handcrafted brushes he works with. He surmounted that hurdle. And you can too.

Kathy Carroll is now carrying nine handcrafted brushes from the Pierre Finkelstein line. Tiff Ziter, Operator of fauxbrushes.com and painter, describes the unique qualities of the three types of brushes Kathy had available. “The first type is a glazing brush. Their round shape holds a ton of material and faux painters can easily glaze an entire wall with control. People also use them for painting murals or glazing small areas such as windows and doors. Glazing for these smaller areas makes this brush premium for faux bois and marble. They disperse the glaze, packing a big punch.”

This next brush is all about performance. Stipple to your hearts content and even close to the corner. Tiff says, “The stippler is eight inches long and almost four inches thick. You hold it like a baseball and pounce the wall. The main purpose of stippling is to disperse the glaze, making it even throughout. What’s great about Pierre Finkelstein’s model is it’s ergonomic handle that allows you to stipple all day long. The hair that we have put in it is very resilient to abuse. You can stipple coarsely, but get a fine stipple. The hair is designed specifically for todays water base mediums, as they tend to have a lot of strong chemicals that can abuse brushes. We have added a mix of nylon to the standard bristle hair to help. You can stipple for miles with Pierre Finkelstein’s stipple brush.”

One of their newer brushes is the blue suede series for a soft, effective finish. It also happens to be their top seller. Tiff explains in detail. “It’s for water base varnish and for certain finishes like furniture table tops, varnishing a door, a window, or a faux marble mantle. Sometimes people spray to avoid brush strokes. With the blue suede brushes, they are so soft they lay down without any lines. Its really beautiful, like you sprayed it.”

There is clearly a difference in performance and result when it comes to brushes. Tiff says, “We work really closely with our distributer in France and Pierre specifies how he wants them made. The reason why he wants them made is because he uses them. Our shop slogan is: shop tested, job proven. We are a working decorative painting company.”

We are excited to carry these exceptional handcrafted decorative brushes. Your clients, designer, and most importantly, you will be thrilled with the results. Be sure to order yours today. If you have questions, come by the studio or call, we are more than happy to answer any you may have.

Returning back from IDAL

Entering the 2013 IDAL Convention, energy sizzled. Creativity flowed freely and the support system was palpable.

Pierre Finkelstein Pointed Water Glazing BrushKeynote speakers were eagerly heard, new faces and familiar seen, and workshops abounded. This year, Chicago Institute of Fine Finishes was represented in a booth. But that’s not all, Kathy Carroll taught a Kitchen Cabinet and Furniture Resurfacing class featuring M.L. Campbell Aqualente, Paint It!,™ and Stain It!.™

When asked about her experience with selling at the booth, Kathy had this to say:

“We were overwhelmed with customers all day, every day. Our top sellers were our Glitters, and our Hollywood, Vegas, and Solid Glass Bead sample packets. It was fun all the way around.”

When asked about her experience with her class, Kitchen Cabinet and Furniture Resurfacing, Kathy said:

“It was fabulous even with all the challenges. The students and I both walked away with a better understanding of spray equipment.”

The artisans in her class were able to see the benefits of Aqualente with its quick drying properties, remarkable durability, and stain resistance. They also worked with Paint It! and Stain IT!.

Paint It!, ready to use out of the can offers great adhesion, beautiful colors, and incredible cost savings. With the ability to use on any surface, the possibilities are remarkable. Stain It! enhances or darkens the paint depending on the color. A wax-like sheen is achieved with one coat. There is no primer needed or sanding. Simple and cost effective.

When asked about her experience at the conference, Kathy had this to say:

“It was a very good convention. There were lots of people there. Some I haven’t seen in years, others I was able to meet face to face who I’m friends with on Facebook. It was a great teaching experience, seeing all the different things people were learning, and making business contacts. One contact, Pierre Finkelstein, resulted in a new product line of brushes we will carry.”

Another IDAL Convention has successfully come to a close. And with its completion, new techniques, products, and connections have been gained. If you were unable to attend the IDAL conference and would like to sign up for a class with Kathy check the website or simply call. Many private or semi-private classes are available. Or, stop by the studio. We are excited to offer exceptional product for your home or business today.

Faux by Kathy Decorative Arts store and shipping

Chicago Institute of Fine Finishes and Faux by Kathy are dedicated to their customers. That’s why the shipping rates have remained the same for two and a half years. No matter what, the clients always win.

When asked about the shipping policy, Kathy said:

“We have a calculated dollar amount of freight that’s charged and posted on the website. It is not by weight. When you ship it is by weight. If someone buys something and it’s higher in dollar value, like $300, and it only weighs four or five pounds, we will always charge the lower amount in shipping. If the shipping exceeds the amount on the chart we do not go back and ask for more money. Either way, the artisan comes out on top.

When an order is placed, we strive to ship it out that same business day. We let them know instantly if we are short on something. Our goal is to keep them on schedule, not hold them up.”

Formerly in the field herself, Kathy knows how important it is to receive the product on time. Worrying about shipping costs is not what she wants her business to revolve around come time to ship. It’s about quality, customer service, and reliability. Time and again, she delivers.
