Artisan of the Month
Nathalie Nielsen

When Nathalie Nielsen’s husband received word of his job transfer, Nathalie did not know that she would be embarking on a new career herself in a few short years. In 1997, Nathalie and her husband moved from Paris, France to Houston, Texas, where he began his new job. While she awaited her papers, she spent her spare time redecorating her house. It was at this point she discovered and fell in love with faux finishing. Liking it so much, she decided to go to school to learn more. In 2000, she befriended a professional faux finisher who she trained with and encouraged her to start her own business.

Nathalie likes to bring innovative ideas and designs to her clients and designers. Even though Nathalie has a full time thriving business, she feels it is important to further her education, and takes classes as time permits. Nathalie has attended the IDAL Convention and Exposition since 2000, when it was held in Houston.

In 2003, she took her first class from Kathy Carroll. “Her samples are beautiful, different and she uses so many brands and products. She is incredible. In 2006, I had a large job to do, using a lime plaster from Italy. I went to Chicago for training with the product before the application and extended my trip to take a class at Kathy’s school. There I learned so much more and came back home with so many beautiful, sellable samples that I continue to take classes with Kathy whenever she teaches at a convention. In February this year, when I saw she was presenting a product line at the concrete show in San Antonio, Texas, I went there to see what it was about and if I could incorporate it in my work. She is so creative, knowledgeable and so much fun. She does not hold anything back. I enjoyed her finishes so much that I’ve taken more classes from Kathy than any other instructor.”

Another element Nathalie provides is Tattoowalls by Architexture. It is the direct transfer of color in mural form from any digital image. “I am not a muralist so this gives me the opportunity to offer beautiful murals to my clients using this method.” The results are stunning and Nathalie’s clients and designers love them.

A memorable project that Nathalie recently completed was a theater room featured on Fox News for a series on man caves. The theme is Harry Potter – to be more specific, recreating the feel of the great dining hall. Nathalie created an amazing atmosphere where the air is rife with impending magic and mayhem. “On the ceiling we troweled a blend of cotton and silk with added mica, glitter and metallic thread. All the components came together for a movie room that looks incredible. We stained and clear lacquered all the extensive woodwork in the room and created faux granite blocks on the walls just like in an old European church. The gargoyles and columns were custom build for the room and transformed to look like they were carved out of granite. It was a great project to work on.” The project is ongoing as she continues to work in the client’s home.

Recently, Nathalie had a consultation with a new client, which was heart wrenching. “She said she felt like the previous painter trashed her house. She was crying and so shaken when she asked, ‘How do I know I can I trust you? How can I be assured it’s going to be alright with you?’” Nathalie showed her new client her extensive portfolio as well as some published work and client referrals to build her confidence. Nathalie was hired to do the job.

She set to work immediately, correcting what was done wrong. Her client was so astounded by the beautiful work that when her mother passed away suddenly she asked Nathalie to continue working. Nathalie’s work enabled her client to cope with her loss by helping to make her home a happy and enjoyable place to live. After the funeral, her client called to say, “Thank you so much, I now have beautiful walls. I want you to do the rest of my house.” Nathalie says, “I work for the best clients, letting me work in their home is such an honor and gives me so much joy.”

Bringing joy to her clients is something that Nathalie strives for. Working on the Davita Dialysis project, Nathalie had an opportunity to transform two typical sterile clinic treatment rooms, into comforting rooms that project a sense of warmth and cheer. “The manager of the clinic wanted the patients who came to learn dialysis to spend their time in comfort rather than feeling as if they were in a hospital environment. We transformed the rooms in just one week before they opened. It was challenging but so rewarding. We glazed the walls, added a view with a window and a trompe l’oeil rug. I enjoyed the project a lot.”

When called to work on a remodel project with a tight timeline, Nathalie decided to show the designer and client a Quick Inspirations sample. They both agreed that it was the perfect finish for that room. Nathalie called Kathy, who came through for her. “Kathy sent it already tinted. It worked perfectly, she is so amazing and it’s quick and easy. The finish was called Golden Taupe, using Perfetto Chateau Cream tinted in 2 different batches over a base of BCI basecoat plaster. The contractors and workers liked the walls so much they kept asking over and over what she was using. The client was so impressed that friends and family members came over to view it. It was a silver or bronze effect depending on how you look at it; it is like magic.

“Earlier this year, I did another finish of Kathy’s Quick Inspiration recipes, that’s also wowed the clients and designer. The product used to create the silky stria background is called Bottle Linen and it is one of her own mixtures. The design is also her own creation that she enlarged to the size needed for the space.”

Nathalie plans to continue her business with the high quality, custom decorative painting that she is currently doing. She enjoys her business along with her wonderful clients and designers that she has the privilege to work with. She is contemplating expanding into decorative concrete as the demand is growing. In the very distant future when she cannot climb scaffoldings, Nathalie intends to create on canvas, small furniture and mirrors.
