Artisan of the Month
Janelle Tague

Faux by Kathy artist of the month Janelle Tague New Lenox IllinoisHave Learjet? Janelle Tague and her company will travel!  Based out of New Lenox, IL, Janelle works in the surrounding suburbs, Chicago, as far north as Wisconsin and as far south as Kankakee.  However, if a client wants Prestige Faux Design, Janelle is willing to travel. “We were asked to do a condo in Ft. Meyers Beach. I said I’d be glad to but I did not know how I would get my supplies there.  The client said she had a Learjet.  So I took my stuff and my three employees! We worked really hard and the job was fantastic. It was a gorgeous penthouse overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.”

As amazing as traveling in a Learjet is, Janelle’s beginning was in her church. As fate would have it, the decorating committee that Janelle was on ran out of money for wallpaper. Janelle came up with a solution everyone was happy with.  She proposed sponge painting and stenciling and proceeded to do it herself. Once she had finished with the walls, the end result had everyone wanting it in their own homes!  She was thrilled and made up business cards. “My son was a year old when I began my business. As he grew, so did the business.” Janelle’s business has been going strong now for 20 years. “My oldest daughter works for me now and does the studio work. She is raising her children in the studio which has its challenges but they are being raised in a completely creative environment.”

Janelle Tague In keeping with the growth of the business, Janelle’s goal is to keep up with the trends and to learn new products so that her clients can have the latest looks on the market.  Janelle stresses the importance of education in her field, “If you want to be on the cutting edge it’s important to continue learning.” After receiving a workforce grant, she and her employees embarked on numerous classes at Chicago Institute of Fine Finishes, Faux Effects, Barbara Skivington, and Atova. She also attends conventions and expos to network with other professional artisans. Janelle met Kathy Carroll at a Detroit convention. “She answered my questions and is a font of knowledge.  She gets right to the problem and knows how the product behaves. That’s why I like going to her studio and taking her classes.  She is funny, interesting, and she is a good friend.”  When Janelle was asked about the classes she has taken she replied, “What classes haven’t I taken?  Wood graining, cabinets, marbling, flooring, countertops; if there’s a new product, I’ve taken a class on it. Specific classes, I don’t know….a gazillion.”

Not only have the classes taken at Chicago Institute of Fine Finishes been incredibly beneficial, Janelle has also subscribed to Quick Inspirations which has proven to be marketable not only to add to her portfolio but to boost her profit margin as well. Janelle also purchases products from Kathy. “I buy lime products, Okios, Golden Product, colorant, cracking plasters, Marmorino, tools, foils, Silver and Gold Leaf. She is always coming up with something new; I appreciate that.”

Janelle TagueNaturally creative, Janelle is able to take everything she learns in her classes and come up with exquisite ideas that continually keep her clients happy. There is a plethora of surfaces, textures and products that Janelle enjoys working with.  “We like everything we do.  Shimmery plasters are a favorite of ours and our clients. We like everything: glazing, marbling, choosing colors and samples, guiding my clients to appropriate decorating conclusions. I’m good at coordinating things; people are happy and grateful when we are done.”

A testament to Janelle’s creativity is her use of hand painted paper. These beautiful papers are applied to create gorgeous, rich designs that have quickly become a favorite among many of her clients. “We also do very creative things like make rocks with the paper.

A challenging job of Janelle’s was working on a 75 foot yacht in Burnham Harbor near Soldier Field.  On the yacht, Janelle faux finished three bathrooms, a bedroom, and the hallway connecting the areas.  “We had to be really creative on the yacht.  The boat shifts and flexes so the products that we used had to accommodate that; no lime plasters!  Even though it was a big boat it was like working in a camper!  But since we ate our lunches on the back deck every day, we felt like queens!”

With an incredible view of Chicago on the 46th floor at One Museum Place, Janelle worked on an incredible project. “They wanted it to be very contemporary.  The pillar that holds up the building was floor to ceiling in the living room. We covered the pillar with silver leaf over black. We also did two bathrooms, a bar wall, a focal wall, and a bedroom playing off the “silver” theme.  It all coordinated perfectly.”

Janelle Tague“Getting to be creative every day is what I enjoy as a faux finisher. Being around others that are more or equally creative helps me keep growing. It is the sort of thing that I can do for the rest of my life. I am never bored!  While Janelle works hard she does not feel like it is work since she loves what she is doing.  She talks about how lucky she is to be able to do something that brings her so much happiness and creativity on a daily basis.   However, she does have a plan in mind for the future. “I will continue what I’m doing until my grandchildren go to school. Then my daughter Allison will take over being on the wall.   When that happens I’m going to run the studio. I will then be the “research and development” department; I will be able to play more!”
