Artisan of the Month
Diane Beard of Creative Impressions by Diane

In 1992 Diane Beard completed an intricate stencil design. That was it. When the paint dried and the design was artfully splayed before her…she knew. It was time to say goodbye to her career as an x-ray technician and begin anew.

Art. Creativity. Design. They called to her. And it was something she could no longer deny.

After a move to Mooresville, North Carolina, Diane found SALI, now known as IDAL, where she went to conventions, networked, and took classes. Along with the conventions, she continued her training in several different professional product lines to expand knowledge her base.

Diane delved into her career as a decorative artist and started her business Creative Impressions by Diane. Located in Mooresville, North Carolina, about thirty miles north of Charlotte, Diane works predominately in the Lake Norman/Charlotte area.

Diane feels strongly about staying current in the industry and takes classes, as she is able, with her thriving business. Recently, she enrolled in a Professional Update class taught by Kathy Carroll. “Kathy is vibrant and fun. She is always trying different things and does a lot of experimentation. She can help guide you with recipes that strategically use products, colors, glass beads and glitter in beautiful combinations. She is invaluable, not only with Proceed products, but with many different product lines, and how to combine them. She comes up with beautiful finishes, with a lot of bling, without a lot of layers. She caries many professional product lines including her own Kathy Carroll line,” said Diane.

Of the multiple products, Diane has a few favorites that she orders from Kathy. They are: the Blue Pearl Metallic Glaze Gilded Walnut and the Proceed line, especially the glass beads and glitter. Diane’s business lends itself to many surfaces, including range hoods, cabinets, furniture, murals, Modello patterns and so many more. Diane has a vast repertoire of skills as a decorative artisan, although her favorites are walls and specialty ceilings.

For the past year and a half Diane has been working with a designer and homeowner in an 18,000 square foot home. The project was so large and went on for such a long time that Diane had five other decorative artists working for her. “The homeowner wanted to have a WOW factor in every room. I was hired for the walls, cabinets and ceilings and was able to do things that no one has ever asked me to do before. I designed and implemented a fireplace mantle with architectural elements and corbels. It is hard to believe the fireplace mantle started out as a plywood board. The mantle was finished using multiple layers of paint and stain to obtain a wood grain finish. The architectural elements were highlighted with gold accenting. It really is a focal point in the living room.
In the elevator I used Modello Design patterns to create an inlaid marquetry border and custom ceiling that looks like inlaid wood but it’s done with stains. It took a long time but I’m really proud of that,” said Diane.

Throughout the process the homeowner relied on Diane and the designer’s opinion for all the decorative finishes, colors and fabrics. There were a total of fourteen bathrooms in the home. Diane was responsible for finishing nine of them, along with three more in the guesthouse. In one of the bathrooms, above many of the doorways, and a headboard or two, beautiful custom Modello patterns were used to create imbedded designs with plaster. “I love using Swarovski crystals and pearls to accent these custom patterns,” said Diane. The pictures show the intricacy and beauty of the designs that add a touch of elegance to each room.

With the many rooms in the house there were several set aside for the grandchildren and their activities. They wanted a craft room that was quite large. “I took inspiration from the fabric and created giant motifs that were in the fabric and hand painted them on the walls. The motifs were then embellished with crafting elements like rickrack, sequins, little bugs, jewels, and buttons. We glued the craft elements on top of the hand painted motifs. The grandchildren’s room has a woodland mural theme. It is fifty feet long with three log cabins built for the grandchildren to sleep in. There is also a flower shop and bait store for the grandchildren to play in. For this room I did the sunrise and cloud work and helped create a woodland mural,” said Diane.

As she moved into other rooms upstairs she designed a birch theme for a second master bedroom. “I created a birch bark finish and birch trees for the second master bedroom. There is a birch bark finish in the powder room as well,” said Diane. She was able to create an incredible ambiance in the wine room. It was one of the areas that required many of her talents. “I created and hand painted rocks and built them up around the wine labels, embedding their favorite corks in the plaster. It’s a cool finish. I also created a focal point in the room by having a custom made wine poster using their name, more rocks were created around this poster,” said Diane. There is also a beautiful mural to accentuate the Tuscan feel.

As the work draws to a close Diane said she plans on entering the American Painting Contractor Top Job Award. From the incredible pictures and the exceptional quality of her work, she is sure to win.

The proof in her work is clear and the change in careers was the right path. Diane said, “The freedom of having my own business is so worth it. Every time you work in a room it’s new and fresh. Decorative finishes give every living space warmth and ambiance, it makes a difference.”

Diane enjoys working on a big project and would hope to do so again. Residential is her passion. Another project she would like to get involved in would be big ceiling finishes using large Modello patterns.
