Artisan of the Month
Kari Campbell

Faux by Kathy Artisan of the month Kari CampbellKari Campbell was thoroughly enjoying her time at home with her only child.  Looking for a way to get more control of her personal time she took a class in faux finishing.  Her interest in art and painting that dated back to high school allowed her to turn an avocation into a vocation.  Starting out in north Dallas she successfully launched her business KWC Designs.  Two years later a family relocation to Houston led her to Definitive Paint and Decor.  “They had these unbelievable samples.  I didn’t know that it could be taken to the level they had on display.  I went home and told to my husband, ‘I found my mother ship today!’  By the time I finished my first class with them I had taken a big step toward the level I am working at now.”  Based in The Woodlands, Texas, Kari primarily works in northern Houston and Kingwood but travels to other cities for repeat clients.

In the decorative painting industry, Kari delves in many wonderful mediums.  While she says painting on canvas will always be a passion, walls and cabinet finishes occupy the bulk of her time.  Venetian plasters are among her favorites and some of the other products that she is fond of working with are foils and metallic paints.  “I love the trend.  Also working with glass beads plays into the metallic.  About two years ago, I learned how to work with acrylic resins and found countertops by Aurastone to be a fascinating look.  I just finished a job involving four unique Aurastone countertops and I really enjoyed it.”  Trends evolve and techniques change so Kari feels it is important to learn new ones and hone her skills even further.  Continued education in the industry “broadens your prospective.  I’ve taken classes from Melanie Royals in San Diego, Dallas, Virgini studios in San Antonio, and Anything But Plain and Definitive here in Houston.  You can always pick up something from different people.  I took Kathy Carroll’s IDAL class and I would love to take more from her.”  Kari met Kathy while they were both taking a class by Anthony Pinkerton.  “Kathy mentioned she was going to teach a class and I signed up for it.  At that time, I didn’t have someone to call and ask faux finish questions.  Kathy comes to the phone and gives me time and I’m impressed with that.  Originally, with Aurastone, there was no one I could call to ask a question.  It’s such a unique system.  Once Kathy picked it up there is now someone I can call and I have a supplier for that too.  I purchase so many products from Kathy at the $450 level that I do not have to pay for shipping.  A few of the products that I purchase on a regular basis are Aurastone, Golden Proceeds, Glass Bead Gel and Heavy Gel Gloss.”

“When the faux finish comes out terrific it’s like you left a part of yourself in your clients home.  I enjoy pleasing the clients but I also enjoy the final faux finish. I love being in a different place and doing something new all the time.  Going to appointments and seeing a new house, getting the puzzle and coming up with the sample and figuring out how to deliver it.”  Providing a design no other home has, fitting in perfectly in high quality grandeur that is what drives Kari and what has made her so successful.  She puts everything she has into her work, ensuring her clients have a work of art that flows throughout their house in decorative splendor.

Reminiscing to one of her major successes, Kari describes the thrill it entailed and the turning point it held for her career.  “My first really big job was for a local surgeon and his wife.  I got a call to bid a new 7000 square foot house that was under construction.  Two weeks later, I got the call that I was selected.  I met with the decorator and found I was chosen based on the quality of my work, not that I was the lowest bid.  I got to finish every wall in the house including murals and some cabinetry.  The challenge came in hiring people and training them right away.  We finished the project on time, on budget, and it was a great success.  I was able to use the photos from this home in my advertising.  Three years ago, the husband decided he wanted to give his wife an anniversary present so I spent three weeks in Austin where he had hired me to finish their weekend house as a gift for his wife.”

Many of Kari’s clients are so impressed with her work that they pass her name on to friends and family.  “Last year (2011) in the fall I got a client that was a referral and I went to talk to him about decorating his second home on a nearby lake.  He was a widower and his daughter was doing a lot of the decorating in the house.  I was there for six months straight.  Everything was a specialty finish.  I did some of my most fun work there.  I was there every day of the week but no weekends.  It was a beautiful view, being able to work and look out the windows at the lake.  I did a metallic, Venetian Plaster with glass bead in the media room.  In the granddaughter’s bedroom I did a faux silk fuchsia pink and in the bathroom a zebra silk.  In the dining room I did a Venetian Plaster in red to duplicate the colors in the brick in the kitchen.  The master bedroom had a Mahjong Foil.  The ceiling in the master bedroom and bathroom had a golden heavy gel that I finished with a final glaze.  In the game room I did five different ceilings, all matching the metallic foil and crackle in a technique I had learned from Gary Lord.”  The final effect was more than what her clients had hoped for.

When tragedy strikes, often it’s how we chose to go on that defines us.  This bittersweet story of another of Kari’s clients shows life, love and beauty arising from loss.  “He and his wife were building a home, it was her project and she wanted a mural in the wine tasting room.  He said they could not afford it at the time.  A short time later she passed away unexpectedly and he called me in to paint the mural in her memory.  He used a photo of her from a vacation they had been on.  It was an autumn scene in a vineyard.”  Again tragedy struck this family when Hurricane Ike hit Galveston and wiped out parts of their house.  “He salvaged some of the floor tiling and had me paint pictures of the house on three of the floor tiles as keepsakes for him and his sons.  They mounted the tile in his house in Houston which he called Marian’s Hideaway.”

There is a level of sophistication and elegance to Kari’s decorative painting.  Colors blend with a graceful and majestic artistry throughout the homes she works on.  Richness of her decorative finishes pleases the eye, offering comfort in stunning elegance.  Kari’s husband joined the business three years ago.  Just what is in store for the future of KWC designs?   “We want to continue to have a full finish faux design company and continue to offer other phases of decorative finishes as they evolve.  We have even done portraits twice now.  Our plan is to continue on the path we are on, leaning more interesting faux finishing.”
