Artisan of the Month
Ruth Giovannetti of Giovannetti Decorative Studios

Ruth Giovannetti of Giovannetti Decorative StudiosIn the beginning stages of Ruth Giovannetti’s business, Giovannetti Decorative Studios, it was a time when wallpaper was in high demand. Not only floor to ceiling wallpaper, but borders and all types of wallpaper applications. While papering in a client’s home, one of the borders was unavailable. Ruth suggested a fairly new concept for the area: faux finishing. It worked seamlessly and her clients were thrilled. Word spread and her clientele grew from there. As she progressed through the subtle beauty of color washing, glazing and working with furniture, she realized she wanted more. That’s when she signed up for classes in San Antonio and began working with plasters and LusterStone™.

As Ruth’s business continued to grow, she felt it was imperative to stay current in the industry. “It’s vital to your business. With the internet, it’s amazing to see what’s out there. Kathy Carroll has informational videos on YouTube, which is great, but classes are so important if you want to succeed in this business,” advises
Ruth.

Ruth Giovannetti of Giovannetti Decorative StudiosRuth was introduced to Kathy Carroll through a fellow decorative painter. “I took a class with Kathy and she propelled me to the next level.” So far, Ruth has taken two classes from Kathy and through the various products she has ordered she has established a few that are favorites. “I love the finish, Cracked Foil, and have done variations of it many times. Two colors of Foil by Kathy, bronze and celadon, with a clear crackle finish and overall black glazing. With the many products, she is thrilled with the knowledge that Kathy is always willing to impart. “Kathy has tested many different products from numerous companies. She mixes them, tests them and makes what she has discovered accessible to her students, while producing beautiful sample boards to present to your clients.”

Through the many years that Ruth has worked in this industry and owned her business, her passion has never waivered, only grown. “I love it, I’ve been doing it for so long I can’t imagine doing anything else. I get so excited I can hardly sleep. I now have more opportunities to do furniture and cabinets. We did a teal color with the Paint It! by FBK. I am excited to experiment with different applications. I have more of a creative license when I work with Dan Wilson Homes, a builder in Lubbock. When I painted his office, we were able to do something special in almost every room.”

Ruth Giovannetti of Giovannetti Decorative StudiosBased out of Lubbock, Texas, Ruth works mainly in the west Texas area but has travelled out of state and out of the country as well. Just recently, Ruth completed a job in Dongguan, China, just a couple of hours from Hong Kong. “It was a furniture showroom, adjacent to the international furniture market. People from all over the world come here to purchase furniture. While there, Kathy helped me get in contact with a Modern Masters representative in China.” Her biggest challenge was training five people who had never held a trowel before and getting through to them via an interpreter. It was a learning curve for both Ruth and her new team. We applied finishes in six rooms on one of the showroom floors in nine days. It was definitely a challenge. My team was frustrated as some of the concepts were difficult to understand both with interpretation and application. It was great being introduced to a new culture and there’s a good possibility I will be going back.” Ruth felt the experience was eye opening, diverse and remarkable all at once, something she is looking forward to repeating.

Ruth Giovannetti of Giovannetti Decorative StudiosIt’s refreshing to have clients with creative minds. One of Ruth’s favorite memories is of a kitchen where her clients decided they did not want to have an average kitchen; instead, they wanted a kitchen they could call their own. “They had a bank of cabinets and a refrigerator that they wanted to look like antique furniture.” Ruth heavily distressed the cabinets, applied stenciling, clear crackle and glazes to achieve the desired results. “In the butler’s pantry we applied what is known as the circus finish, we painted bright colors under a white crackle and then glazed. I also did a groined ceiling using metallic plaster with Modellos on each face.”

Another client of Ruth’s had a house that was painted almost completely Navaho white. This was one she remembers fondly as the owners gave her creative license. “This was a big remodel and we did a finish in nearly every room. We crackled and stained all trim and doors. Surrounding a bank of stained alder wood cabinets was a white door and I did a faux bois and you would be hard pressed to know it was not original alder. It was a grossezza finish with strie’ glazes. In the dining room I did a pull off crackle and a knocked back stencil in chocolate and deep teal. In the bathroom they have “Day of the Dead” decor from Mexico and on the black cabinets I used a stencil to resemble old silver plating.” Everything turned out beautiful. Her clients were thrilled to have a house brimming with color and full of character.

Ruth is excited with what the future holds. She will continue to pursue new ideas and add exciting elements to her portfolio.
