Artisan of the Month
Bryan King

After studying drawing and painting at Carnegie Mellon University, Bryan King went on to receive his masters at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Fresh out of graduate school, he continued to sell several pieces in a gallery, while working odd jobs and in art galleries. It wasn’t until later, that an opportunity arose, “purely by accident,” stated Bryan. “My older sister is an interior designer. Around 1986, she asked if I could do faux marble for a client of hers and I gave it a shot.”
The timing was perfect, as the industry was not saturated with decorative finishers. “I was copying old master paintings,” stated Bryan, “there was a set number to complete and that was coming to an end. I was going to be looking for employment. After that first job people were asking for my business card.”

Recognizing the importance for continued education from the beginning, Bryan attends classes and conferences as time permits. During the 2013 IDAL conference, he met Kathy Carroll face-to-face. “I met her for the first time at IDAL this year, but had spoken to her earlier ordering some products on the phone. I’d known of her and her school for a while, but have never met her until this year during a class using Golden products called Proceed All Stars; Kathy was one of the All Stars. I was very impressed with her.”

Bryan’s business, Artifice Inc., is located in Arlington, Virginia. He works predominately in the metropolitan Washington DC area, with the majority of the work taking place in Northern Virginia. For the right job, Bryan is definitely willing to travel.
While a large portion of the work Bryan receives is for murals, he also does decorative finishing. From ceilings to floors, he specializes in custom wall finishes, glazing, marbling, graining, and Italian plasters to name a few.

You may be surprised that a mural you frequently walk by in Washington DC happens to be one Bryan painted. “I enjoy the public work. You get a lot of feedback and everyone gets to enjoy it. I have my thumbprint on the landscape. I’ve completed nine large exterior murals in the Washington metropolitan area.”

From outside to in, Bryan’s work is well known. His murals sprawl through the DC area and now, his stamp, along with colleague Dean Sickler, is inside the U.S. Capitol Visitor’s Center. “Our task was to paint the columns and pilasters in faux Red Levanto marble, the paneling in a cream colored faux Hauteville marble, and the base in a faux French Grey marble. As well we were asked to recreate an ornamental egg and dart molding and faux marble inlay Greek key as a border for two panels at either end of the Senate Theater.”

Incorporating friends into a commissioned mural brought further enjoyment for this favorite project. “This summer, I did a large mural for a bike shop in Vienna, Virginia, where I painted my younger son’s friend’s family on bicycles riding out of a trompe-l’oeil arch. That was a fun project, and won a Beautification Award from the town of Vienna.”

Up for a challenge, Bryan was commissioned to paint a mural in Reston, Virginia from a design another artist had created. The only obstacle was the design was originally from an 10” x 11.5” rendering. “I was hired as a technician to transfer her complicated design to scale.” The mural was painted on a cement surface that was 20’h x 23’w.

With all Bryan’s work, there is intricacy, precision, and emotion. He captures the essence and carries the viewer along for the ride. If there’s movement in the mural, you feel it. If it’s a different time period, you experience it. Bryan says, “I do a lot of faux finishing, but I do a much higher proportion of mural work. I was always interested in contemporary artwork. I was always looking at art but had a special interest in the traditional technical skills involved in my work. I was always painting in a representational style.”
What are Bryan’s plans going forward? “I’m always going to paint. Even if I were to retire I would still paint. Currently I am researching methods for doing the exterior murals off-site and adhering the painted image to the surface.”
