Artisan of the Month
Patricia Presto

Patricia Presto Decorative Artisan of the MonthPatricia Presto always had a creative spirit waiting to be unleashed.  Interestingly, a difficult situation in her life turned out to be the birth of a new business idea that allowed that very thing to happen.  In 2000, going through a divorce with two small children to raise, she was at a cross-roads of what to do next.  Her past career as an event planner for Citicorp in New York had been a great job, but not one that could be re-started easily without severe compromises to time with her children.  No answers were coming to her at that moment, so she decided to change what she could now to make her children feel at home in their new circumstances.  Maybe a new environment would give her a fresh perspective on what her next move should be.

The next day she set out to Home Depot to start her first faux finish with very basic tools and glazes.  She loved the warmth of the parchment look that she created on her living room walls, so much so, that she decided it was time to get back into life and have a party! During the party, several friends commented on how pretty the house looked and admired the wall finish.  They asked if she would do something similar in their homes.  Something sparked in Patricia that this could actually be a business that worked for her as well as her children.

Patricia loves learning and decided to get more education in the world of decorative finishes.  She researched & found several schools to attend, but the one that stood out to her in quality and creating a professional portfolio was The Finishing School located in Atlanta.  She signed up for the basic class and loved the concept of the progression of the classes.  After basic classes were completed, one could continue on to all sort of branches of decorative painting.  It was geared towards working professionals and not hobbyists, which was also a good avenue for Patricia as she had worked in a corporate environment for a long time, and was geared towards business and the atmosphere of professionalism.  She met many of her friends and colleagues today through The Finishing School.

Several classes later, her client list started to build.  She also started volunteering her decorative finishes, stencil designs and project management skills to Habitat for Humanity, Atlanta Symphony Showcase House, and local schools. As the economy took its dips and turns, Patricia turned things around to stay in the business she loved.  While others were dropping off the radar, she started to also offer project management of interior and exterior painting along with color consulting and staging of homes for sale.

Finishes never left her heart, but her portfolio was becoming dated.  A class was offered through a decorative artists group she attends, Southeastern Decorative Artists League; a branch of the IDAL, International Decorative Artists League, that sparked her interest in updating her portfolio.  The class was being taught by Kathy Carroll, President of Chicago Institute of Fine Finishes, and an industry "go to" finisher for awesome finishes and strong business knowledge. “I loved it.  The boards were fantastic, and Kathy is a great teacher.  I walked away with a fully updated and beautiful portfolio and a teacher that was so generous with her recipes that I felt confident again in offering finishes."  Patricia also stated that Kathy has become a "friend" on Facebook and LinkedIn and considers Kathy a mentor.  "Kathy was in the faux finishing business a long time and has working knowledge of what this business entails to be successful.  Faux Finishers have to think with both sides of the brain in order to make their business successful.  The word ‘starving artist’ is all too true.  Artists want to create, not deal with paperwork or think about the future.  But Kathy really showed me how to do both.”

After taking her class, Patricia began ordering a product that quickly became her favorite, Glass Beads.  "I love the look of glass beads because it can go traditional or contemporary. The colors are endless.  It is one of those finishes that gets a lot of attention, and everyone wants to touch the wall.”

Patricia works in all elements of decorative art, but re-purposing furniture & face-lifting kitchen cabinetry is one of her favorite substrates. "I'm very much into re-purposing, transforming, and helping people to see the potential of items already in their home.  It adds to the antiquity of a home to refresh something that perhaps was given to you by a relative or has a special place in your heart.  Clients give me creative license in these circumstances, and that is where I truly shine."

Another new place for Patricia to showcase her creativity is accent walls.  Gone are the days of just a change of color on one wall. "I love to do accent walls with exciting and dramatic all-over stencils or exciting and colorful paint techniques."

Patricia finds the most joy when she is in her creative element. "I enjoy the freedom of living my art.  I enjoy the process from beginning to end.  Something new happens with every project - and my trouble shooting skills from Corporate America has transferred to that end of my business for sure.  No project is without its challenges."

As she moves forward, her plans to expand and grow are forming.  Patricia recently became certified as an Architectural Color Consultant, giving her even more ways to introduce colors into living spaces.  She plans on expanding that skill to specialize in women's spaces as they move into the "third phase" of life.  The 40's and 50's are an interesting place for women today.  I find it incredibly exciting, and I would love to help women reach their potential and their dreams by creating spaces that are uniquely their own through color and finishes.  One woman client of mine is creating her own art studio.  She calls it "Sooz' World." I'm so excited to be helping her with all sorts of new visions & color choices.  She's a ‘picker’ so has accrued several fascinating old barn doors, an old locker and a traditional white niche - all pieces that have meant something to her in her life or that she has carefully chosen, but now she wants to change it up to show who she is and where she is going & how to display her treasures.  She called on me to help her get the job done.  So far I have created an old rusted finish for the niche, the lockers have turned from pink and orange to an industrial drippy vibe of colorful metallics.  Her studio is going to be all about her and how she wants to express herself.  Color is an integral part of that process."

In speaking with Patricia, you can feel her enthusiasm for her life's work.  "I am an entrepreneur and contractor at heart.  The whole process is what makes me tick.  I hope to be doing this for many years to come.  My children have been my inspiration.  My love for them pushed me to create something that would work for all of us at a difficult time in our lives.  Their creative spirits as children made me realize that mine had been put away.  I always encourage them to go for their dreams.  Life is too short to do something anyone could do.  Find something unique, something special inside of you and expand it."
