Artisan of the Month
Diane LaLonde Hasso Decorative Finishes in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Kathy Anders or Atlanta Decorative Finishes

In 1995, Diane LaLonde Hasso began and established a creative business in hand painted clothing, children’s furniture, and murals. As the years passed she realized she wanted more. “I wanted to grow and enhance my skills,” said Diane.

She began training with masters all over the United States and in 2001 Diane added an additional business, Faux-Real, LLC. As an Interior Finish Designer she found the creative outlet she craved. Most of Diane’s clients are in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where her business is based, but she also works in the surrounding suburbs, New York City, and travels for the right job.

In a field that constantly changes, Diane feels strongly about working hard to stay on top of the new trends and materials. With a free spirit and highly creative mind she delved into design options and experimented. “I mostly develop my own finishes at this point. Since they are so custom to the area, they are selling more than the finishes I’ve taken classes in,” said Diane. With yet another expansion to her growing business, she added a “little crew of finishers and painters.”

When a large job on the horizon called for a specific look, Diane perused the Internet and chat sites to find the right company to assist her. From the praise she read on the Internet, she knew immediately Kathy Carroll and her company were what she was looking for. “I put in a $1000 order due to a recent sale of some of my finishes from my workshop. I am using all the materials I purchased. I’ve talked with her a few times this past year and she’s very helpful. She goes out of her way to help me and answer my questions. I really appreciate that. Not everyone is willing to put that time in,” said Diane. A few favorite products she orders from Kathy are Crystal Brush, Bella Glass Beads and Glitter, Blue Pearl, and Golden’s Perfetto Grosezza.

With her added crew, Diane is able to focus slightly more on the design, marketing, and running of the business, which she loves. “I’m designing finishes that go on the walls, the ceilings, furniture, cabinets, whatever the space is. I’m able to do more and more interior design while working with the designers or the homeowners,” said Diane. She also creates her own stencils and reproduces wallpaper. “My designers like that I bring something to the table. I mix my own color for each process, it’s helped me be more successful. I consider myself part of the design team or I am the design team.”

Owning her business, working with designers and homeowners, has given her the opportunity to optimize her artistic ability. “I sometimes make up colors, that’s one of my favorite things to do. Another favorite is the design process: picking out color, architectural features if there are some, whether it should be vertical or horizontal, if I should add light or height, tying rooms together, if there are problem areas like a mud room and the kids or dogs will make a mess, how to disguise or hide that. As an artist and a finisher it’s really important to be able to visualize, to know how to get there, to be able to guide a client and designer when the space dictates that need.”

She has been recognized in the industry and won an award in her very first year from the Faux Academy. One of her finishes was in the Better Homes and Gardens Kitchens and Baths special publications. She’s also been in local magazines, featured in many Local Homes of the Year, Showcase of Homes, and Parade of Homes. She volunteers for the Boys and Girls Club in Holland, Michigan, and has taught classes at home repair services.

Throughout Diane’s career, several jobs stand out in her memory. One of those is her very first job where she worked with a designer for a high-end client in 2005. “There were nine rooms and multiple finishes in each room that I was able to skillfully go in and create all the designs for,” said Diane. When she noticed a place over the island that needed attention, she pointed it out to the designer. “She started drawing…they had five children and a family logo. I was excited because I got to be a part of that. I was encouraged, collaborating with a designer that had an architectural background. I did the whole ceiling and walls as well.” The craftsman style home was an exciting challenge for Diane, one where she was able to grow and exhibit her design work.

Working with the same designer from her first job, Diane was able to apply several finishes to multiple rooms. “This was my second largest project financially and one I did the most design work for. I came up with all the designs and colors, and tied in all the colors, textures and finishes,” said Diane. In addition, she hand painted a reproduction from a painting the clients showed her onto a custom built vanity. “I got to do a lot of neat things. It was room after room, all connected. I had assumed all designers had thought faux finishers couldn’t do faux designs in adjacent rooms. I felt like I was able to break that thought process of putting multiple finishes next to each other.”

Working with a new designer on a million dollar home, Diane wanted to come up with a new high-end finish. “I created a quarter inch overlap seam, as if someone had stitched it and put it on the wall. I developed the whole process, the material, everything. I used specialty materials and paints on a wall and vanity area on a powder room. The designer ended up putting the wood slats vertically and I put the nail tacks horizontally along the chair rail and crown molding,” said Diane. The end result complimented the beach cottage theme throughout the house on Lake Michigan with its fabric-upholstered look.

Diane was working with a designer on a new builder speck while the kitchen was being re-built. “The builder wanted a black crackle. It was so cool, a peppery-bronze. It was so beautiful that I couldn’t keep cards in the house. He was able to sell the house in the Parade of Homes. I just recently used it on some maple cabinets, but without the crackle on it, I did it a little more modern. I transformed gold dining room ceiling lights using the same kind of idea. It’s saleable!” said Diane.

Her most recent client lives in New York City, is a high-end fashion designer, and has more than one home Diane may be working in. “I’ve done some work in her house [that stemmed from] some of my original work. She was also thinking about some of it for her other house as well. The current job will be to do a traditional, classic finish in the master bath. But what inspired her was a textured metallic pearl color that I designed. She saw it and loved it. So she will most likely do that in her other property. I am very honored, very thrilled, to work for her as she is a designer in her own right on the red carpet,” said Diane.

What are Diane’s plans for the future? With the current success of her business she will continue to move forward while focusing even more on designing and marketing. In addition, she enjoys teaching and has taught classes at the local community college. She plans to continue to teach about the different product lines she uses. As she is always looking forward, she has her sights set on future opportunities with her designs. “I’ve tried to collaborate with an international furniture designer and would love to sell some of my designs with him. I’d definitely like to focus on selling my designs,” said Diane.
